On Saturday, I received a text from Ben. It was a picture of what was currently playing on his car radio display: Sleep Without You by Brett Young accompanied by a message that read “just found your new favorite song”. I have to laugh when Ben does stuff like this. He’s good. I mean, after almost four years of dating he has to be. He knows my music likes, dislikes, and in-betweens.
Eager to listen to what was promised to be a new favorite, I looked the song up when I got home. Halfway through the chorus, I knew that Brett Young was going to be my next Headphone Highlights feature.
You see, the more that I write these posts, the more I realize that I have a “type” when it comes to music. The genre isn’t as important as the fact that it has to be vibey (a word that I probably overuse). Singing the chorus to myself for hours on end after hearing a song for the first time is a sure sign that I’m hooked. Bonus points if the artist has slower, subtle-toned tracks that can keep me interested. Young checks all of these boxes.
“As long as the night ends with you in a yellow cab shooting me a text sayin’ comin’ home soon“. At first glance, you may think there’s no way that lyrics about a yellow cab and text messaging would ever make musical sense. At first listen, you realize you’re wrong. With the right rhythm and tone on his lyric delivery, Young nails it with Sleep Without You.
His self titled EP was released last week and you can rest assured it’s sitting pretty in my Spotibrary. Early favorites from the 6-track debut (excluding the obvious SWY) include: Left Side of Leavin’, In Case You Didn’t Know, and Like I Loved You.
