When I heard that Cirque du Soleil was coming back to Tampa with their new show CRYSTAL, I was elated. Ben and I went to a Cirque show last year and honestly it was one of the most incredible experiences. We watched a talented cast perform acrobatics, aerial moves, and acts that really made you say HOLY CRAP HOW DID THEY JUST DO THAT? Yes – it was safe to say I was super excited for round two of Cirque and to experience CRYSTAL. It came with an interesting twist though: it was all going to be performed on ice.
Now let’s just stop and break the ice here because I know exactly what you’re thinking: how in the world are they going to do all things Cirque in ice skates on a slick icy floor?
I was thinking the exact same thing. I’m here to tell you to put those doubts aside because they totally delivered on the performance piece. Somehow the whole cast zooming around in ice skates made the experience even more thrilling to watch. And we all know how thrilling Cirque shows already are. The ice definitely takes it to a whole new level.
Each skater moved ever so gracefully, without missing a beat. They zoomed through the icy floor of the arena leaving you on the edge of your seat (and hovering over your iPhone’s boomerang button) waiting for what unbelievable move was to come next. Although the show is performed on ice, CRYSTAL also includes token aerial movements that the Cirque crowd is known to love.
The storyline behind CRYSTAL takes you on a journey that we can all relate to: self discovery. As the show goes on, you’re taken inside of the imagination and thoughts of the show’s main red-headed character: Crystal. Her vibrant imagination comes to life more and more after each act. CRYSTAL also has an incredible soundtrack, at times even blending in known hits like Sia’s Chandelier and Beyoncé’s Halo.
Ben and I have our share of date nights, and this was definitely a date night well spent. It’s not often that we have the time to go to shows especially during the holiday season when things are cray cray, but I’m so glad that we took the time to see CRYSTAL. It was totally worth taking a night to sit back, relax, and truly enjoy the show.
I’d highly recommend checking out CRYSTAL if you get the chance. The show is at Amalie Arena until December 23rd. You can find more information on their website here.
Thank you so much to Cirque du Soleil for having us out! All thoughts, opinions, and good times expressed here are my own.
